Grosseto
airport was established as a major military facility
before being opened to civil aviation traffic in the
early 1960s, in response to the needs of the growing
tourist industry.
This required an initial intervention by local government
bodies to fence off the civilian area, construct an
apron and set up a temporary airfield.

In the
years from 1965 to 1977, traffic built up to a total
of 16,000 passengers a year.
In the same period,
the Punta Ala area was also being developed, generating
air traffic between Milan and Grosseto and the Swedish
market was showing an interest in Castiglione della
Pescaia.
It was there that the
Villaggio Hotel Riva del Sole was built.

Subsequently,
development of the territorial economy, especially the
tourist sector, prompted radical improvements to overcome
the now serious restrictions imposed by the existing
primary structures.
For that reason, S.E.A.M. was set up in 1989 to manage
the airport. As its name implies, the company is in
the centre of the Maremma, the area of Tuscany and Lazio
with outstanding environmental, tourist, scenic, archaeological,
spa and hot springs, hunting and natural history attractions.

In 2000,
the new airport was inaugurated.
After extension of the
apron and car parking areas, it will be able to cater
for an overall traffic of up to 100,000 passengers
a year.
